Subject: Advanced Interest Targeting

Last updated May 2026 · By Social Stardom

When targeting interests, you?ll only get the most basic ones out of Facebook. It?s almost like they don?t WANT you to run successful ads!

This is the trickiest part, because Facebook?s interface doesn?t always tell you about a lot of the interests you can use. You must find them on your own.

Let?s say you?re targeting golf. That?s an interest, and it? easy to find by just entering the word golf into the interests box in the ads manager. Once you do this, Facebook will show you a few more interests related to golf. It will suggest things such as ?golf courses? and ?TaylorMade Golf?. The trouble is, it doesn?t show you a lot of the interests that would be most beneficial for you to target. You have to find them on your own.

One way to do this is by visiting Facebook pages within your niche and looking to see which pages those pages are liking. (You can find the pages any Facebook page likes by looking in the left hand column on that page and locating the section titled ?Liked By This Page?. Only three pages will be shown my default. You can see more, if there are more than three, by clicking the arrow to the right of the section title. This will pop up a window to show you all the pages that page has liked.)

Make a list of the pages listed there. You?ll be able to target many of them as interests, but not all pages can be targeted. It seems only the most popular ?official? pages are able to be targeted as interests.

When researching the ?golf? niche, I went to the official Facebook page for the PGA Tour and looked at their likes. They had liked a bunch of individual golfers, several different golf tours, the Golf Channel, and a whole long list of others. This was a gold mine as far as interests for golf!

You can delve even further by clicking some of those pages and looking at the pages THEY like. By doing this, I was able to find a list of about 200 potential interests to target in about fifteen minutes. It?s a relatively slow process, but it?s worth the extra effort to find those hidden gems that most people would never think to target.

An additional benefit to targeting these hidden gems is that you?ll be finding the more die-hard fans in your niche. Still using the example of golf, you might think targeting Tiger Woods would be a good idea, because he?s still the most recognized name in golf. But a lot of the people who like him on Facebook aren?t necessarily golfers, or even die-hard fans of golf. They?re just people who like him because he?s famous, or because they heard about the scandal of his affair and liked him out of morbid curiosity.

By targeting those pages that are not as popular, for example Rory McIlroy or Phil Mickelson, or Vijay Singh, you?ll be targeting people who are more likely to be passionate about golf than just having a casual interest. This will translate into more traffic, less competition, and typically a lower price per click!

This concludes our series on inexpensive advertising on Facebook. I hope you?ve learned a lot and enjoyed it. Good luck!
